Abstract

Representatives from various genera of the order were investigated by comparative cataloging of their 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acids to establish their phylogenetic relationships. Members of , and form one cluster that is peripherally related to the cluster defined by members of , and and strains of , and are phylogenetically closely related, whereas is more distantly related to this cluster. and represent individual clusters. is a member of the line of descent. This grouping of organisms is highly supported not only by data from deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid homology studies and deoxyribonucleic acid-ribosomal ribonucleic acid cistron similarity studies but also by several common biochemical characteristics of proven taxonomic value.
