Open Access rates

The Microbiology Society does not charge for any publishing services (not submission fees, page nor colour fees, or any other publishing-associated fees) other than for Gold Open Access (OA) as described below.

From 2020, there will be two routes to Gold OA: via Publish and Read licences and via Article Processing Charge (APC) payments.

If your institution opts for a Publish and Read licence, it covers the cost of publishing OA for all corresponding authors affiliated with the institution, throughout the duration of the licence which runs for a calendar year. There are no caps on the number of articles that are covered which means that you do not have to check whether a limited fund has been exhausted.  A list of institutions whose authors are eligible for fee-free OA is here.

Publish and Read is designed to be administratively easy and simple for all involved.

Authors submit their manuscript via our normal submission system. Authors who already know – or have checked – that they are eligible will select the OA route and the publishing team will also ensure eligibility claims are up-to-date with our records.

Authors who wish to publish Gold OA, but are not covered by a Publish and Read licence may do so by paying an APC, details of which are provided below.

APC subsidies and discounts

We offer APC subsidies, as well as special offers for reviewers and members of our Editorial Boards. The standard subsidies are:

  • 30% off for corresponding authors who are members of the Microbiology Society. Members should use their membership number as the discount code when requested by Copyright Clearance Center.
  • 20% off for corresponding authors submitting to Journal of General Virology who are members of our affiliated societies: American Society for Virology, Australasian Virology Society, Canadian Society for Virology, Gesellschaft für Virologie, and the Asociación Mexicana de Microbiología. Members should contact their respective Society for the associated discount code.
  • 100% APC waiver in our two OA journals, Microbial Genomics and Access Microbiology, for corresponding authors from countries in Group A and B of the HINARI programme. Authors will receive an APC payment email and should complete the transaction within Copyright Clearance Center where the APC waiver will be automatically applied.

Please note that only one discount may be applied per submission.

The EU requires that VAT rates be applied based on the location of the customer for electronic services. Charges are applied during the APC checkout process, and are as follows:

  • 20% on all transactions with UK individuals or institutions;
  • 20% on transactions with EU individuals without a VAT registration number;
  • 0% on transactions with EU institutions with a VAT registration number;
  • 0% on transactions with individuals or institutions outside of the UK or EU.

Paying the APC

If you want your article to be immediately OA, select the Open Access option during submission. If the article is accepted, we will send you an email containing a link to the Copyright Clearance Center Rightslink platform where you can confirm your order and pay the APC.

Refund policy

APCs will be reimbursed if an article does not comply with the research funder's requirements because of our oversight, or if a corresponding author from a Publish and Read institution has not been identified due to our oversight.

APCs will not be refunded where article publication is not compliant with funder mandates for reasons outside our control. The Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies maintains a list of policymakers and their mandates.
