Institutional agreements: fee-free Open Access publishing
The Microbiology Society offers multiple routes to fee-free Open Access via our institutional agreements, helping institutions to make the transition to an increasingly Open Access (OA) publishing landscape.
Publish and Read is our Transformative Agreement model across our full portfolio, established in 2020. Publish and Read is designed to provide a frictionless OA experience for authors and maximum value for institutions, with minimum administration. It offers institutions an alternative to both subscriptions and article processing charges (APCs) – affiliated researchers can read all content and enjoy uncapped, APC-free OA publishing across all Microbiology Society titles.
Our Subscribe to Open (S2O) model offers fee-free OA publication for institutions subscribed to the Journal of General Virology and the Journal of Medical Microbiology. Designed to support sustainable transition of these titles to OA, S2O works on an annual basis: provided that enough subscriptions are renewed, the journal is moved to OA for that year. The Microbiology Society’s S2O model guarantees authors at subscribing institutions APC-free OA publishing in the title(s) subscribed to, regardless of whether the journal is OA for the year or not.
To benefit from fee-free OA publishing via an institutional agreement, authors must be listed as a Corresponding Author and must submit using their institutional email address. See our author guide to institutional agreements for further information and check if your institution has an agreement with the Microbiology Society via our institutional agreement checker tool
See our Routes to Open Access page for more information on options for OA publishing in our portfolio.
