SUMMARY: Ammonia, urea and glutamate are each used as sole nitrogen source by germinating conidia of Aspergillus clavatus. Ammonia is used preferentially when provided in the medium together with urea or glutamate. Germinated conidia actively transport glutamate against a concentration gradient. The suppression of glutamate utilization by ammonia is possibly mediated by an effect on the transport system for glutamate.
