Abstract

SUMMARY: The effect of thirty-seven different steroids on the growth of is reported. The effects varied from complete inhibition of growth to stimulation. Highly inhibitory compounds included androstan-3, 17-dione, testosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, progesterone and 7-dehydro-cholesterol. 17α-Hydroxypregnenolone was stimulatory but all other compounds with the 17α-hydroxyl group were inactive. Structural requirements for activity are discussed.
