Abstract

Summary: Snoswell’s (1959) postulate that NAD-independent lactic dehydrogenases are associated with anaerobiosis has been examined by searching for the enzymes in 20 heterotrophic bacteria. The NAD-independent dehydrogenases are widely distributed but are particularly associated with facultative anaerobes.
