Abstract

SUMMARY: By taking advantage of the long lag period before minimal therapeutic concentrations of penicillin kill bacteria, five mutants of the K12 strain of () have been isolated following ultraviolet irradiation, which were 10–50 times more sensitive to penicillin than K12. This supports the theory that development of antibiotic-resistant forms is by mutation and selection.
