SUMMARY: The metabolic pathways used by members of the genus Azotobacter for the oxidation of benzoate and p-hydroxy-benzoate have been investigated. A. chroococcum, A. vinelandii and A. beijerinckii oxidize benzoate via catechol, which is further metabolized by meta cleavage. The same species oxidize p-hydroxybenzoate via protocatechuate, which is dissimilated through the β-ketoadipate pathway.
