Abstract

SUMMARY: Immunological studies were made in order to characterize the lipopolysaccharides of rough mutants of and . Groups of mutants, specified by their phage pattern, also showed group homogeneity with respect to their immunological specificity, especially when using the passive haemagglutination inhibition technique. Cross-reactions between mutants belonging to different phage groups could generally be explained on the basis of the carbohydrate composition of the lipopolysaccharide.
