Abstract

SUMMARY: Purified cell walls were isolated from hyphae of Sacc. and Whem. Electron micrographs showed microfibrils in the walls. The walls are composed chiefly of carbohydrate material, mainly D-glucose, together with D-galactose, glucosamine and mannose. Only small amounts of protein were found. Fractionation with alkali and acid indicated that the walls contain several glycans.
