A surface layer with a fibrillar structure was observed on the aerial hyphae and spores in all three types of preparation. The fate of this layer during spore formation and germination was studied; it is a loose covering which breaks when the spores separate and when the germ tubes emerge, and it is easily lost when the organisms are disrupted. No organized surface structures were observed on the underlying hyphal or spore walls. %U https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/micro/10.1099/00221287-26-2-325
