SUMMARY: Two of the Lactobacillus species previously defined, Lactobacilus helveticus and the ‘intermediate group’, have been renamed L. casei var. rhamnosus and L. helveticus (Orla-Jensen) Holland, respectively. Antisera prepared against L. bulgaricus and L. helveticus (Orla-Jensen) Holland show that these species belong to the same serological group. The names of the serological groups previously defined have been replaced by letters.
