Abstract

Summary: ATCC 4273 () has a restriction-modification system with the same recognition sequence, methylation site and cleavage site as the I restriction-modification system. Both the restriction endonuclease and the DNA-methyltransferase (DNA-MTase) have been partially purified and characterized. The nuclease has requirements for activity similar to I, and a native of about 46000. The DNA-MTase is a protein with an of about 67000. No DNA homology was detected between the cloned I restriction-modification genes of and chromosomal DNA.
