IncP plasmids were transferred by conjugation from to gas-vacuolate strains of , between strains of , and from to . These plasmids would also mobilize the chromosome of . In this way, genes could complement mutations in either or . A locus involved in gas vesicle production was co-transferred with rifampicin resistance in matings between strains of .
