Abstract

A tissue-destructive protease of was assayed for in the lungs of experimentally infected guinea-pigs by ELISA. It was found in amounts equivalent to the known lethal dose of purified protease administered by the intranasal route. The identity of the protease was confirmed by immunoblot analysis. This is further evidence that protease may play a major role in the pathogenesis of Legionnaires’ disease.
