Metabolism of 14C-labelled methoxyl groups in vanillic and syringic acid to 14CO2 by various white-rot, brown-rot and soft-rot fungi was investigated in the presence of different amounts of glucose and nitrogen. In general, methoxyl metabolism in these fungi was repressed by 1% (w/v) glucose and stimulated by nitrogen. The soft-rot fungus Petriellidium boydii was the exception and metabolized the methoxyl group of vanillic acid without glucose repression. Generally, brown-rot and soft-rot fungi metabolized the methoxyl groups of syringate faster than the vanillate methoxyl group.
