Acids with an odd number of carbon atoms in the side chain (phenylpropionic, phenylvaleric and phenylheptylic acids) were converted to benzoic acid, and cinnamic acid was an intermediate. o-Hydroxy-phenylacetic acid was identified as a common product when acids with an even number of carbon atoms (phenylacetic, phenylbutyric, phenylcaproic and phenylcaprylic) were used. This evidence supports β-oxidation as a mechanism of breakdown of short chain fatty acids by N. opaca. %U https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/micro/10.1099/00221287-13-2-361
