Abstract

The erythromycin-producing organism, , is highly resistant to erythromycin and also to other members of the macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin type B (MLS) group of antibiotics. Resistance results from the presence of a single residue of , -dimethyl-adenine in 23S rRNA. The enzyme which produces this residue (‘the erythromycin-resistance methylase’) has been isolated and characterized .
