Abstract

Isolates of (Lib.) de Bary, Erikss. and Jag. were studied to determine if the numbers of nuclei in mature ascospores and chromosome numbers of these fungi could be used for identification purposes. Isolates of had four nuclei in each ascospore and a haploid chromosome count of four, had four nuclei in each ascospore and a haploid chromosome count of eight, and had two nuclei per ascospore and a haploid chromosome count of eight. Thus, consistent cytological differences were observed, supporting our earlier conclusions that , and are distinct species.
