Here, it is reported that the B. pertussis pertactin gene sequence for the region that encompasses the RT-PCR probe and primers is nearly identical to that of many Bordetella bronchiseptica strains of human and avian origin. Additionally, it is demonstrated that such strains are erroneously identified as B. pertussis using the RT-PCR assay.
