Abstract

Summary

Two strains of that have linked and unstable resistance to kanamycin and streptomycin have been isolated. It was shown that in one of these strains (1) resistance to kanamycin and streptomycin was co-ordinately lost at high frequency during nine serial screenings of resistant variants, (2) resistance to both antibiotics could be co-transduced, and (3) in the transductants, resistance to these antibiotics was both linked and unstable, as in the donor strain. In both strains resistance to streptomycin and kanamycin appears to be controlled by the same extrachromosomal element.
