The second paragraph should be replaced by the following:
The severity of erythema was scored 0 to +++. A score of + was recorded when the skin of the right ear was clearly more pink than that of the left. A +++ score implied that the right ear was bright red. The proportion of surviving animals with a score of at least ++ varied from only 23% in the Bristol Swiss mice to 97% in NIH mice infected with 6 × 105 p.f.u.
The incidence of ear paralysis varied between 10% in MFI mice and 73% in SWR mice. There was no correlation between severity of erythema and presence of ear paralysis.
