This annotation contains a series of amendments and additions to the National Collection of Type Culture data on strains held in the National Collection of Type Cultures which are given in “A list of type and reference strains of bacteria,” (Sneath and Skerman 1966). Amendments or additions to the data of other Culture Collections are not included. It is suggested that copies of the list should be emended to avoid errors until a revised list is published.

Organisms corresponding to the description of Moraxella nonliquefaciens can be subdivided into several taxa. A subgroup with comparatively fastidious growth requirements is retained in the species M. nonliquefaciens, and a revised description of this species is given. The strain 4663/62 is proposed as a neotype strain. A second, more robust subgroup is described and given the name M. osloensis. The strain A 1920 is designated as the type strain. The use in taxonomy of such criteria as DNA base composition and compatibility in transformation is briefly discussed.

A new serotype, Salmonella sp. ser. herzliya, was isolated from the intestinal content of a snake. Its antigenic structure is: 11 :y: e, n, x.

An addendum which includes the names of bacterial taxa published circa 1950-1967 and not included in the Index Bergeyana (1966). All names have been evaluated according to the Rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria (1966) and are listed in the same form as that used in the Index Bergeyana. Species, serotypes or new combinations of the genus Salmonella are not included.

This appreciation of Professor Buchanan was written by one of his oldest colleagues at the request of the Chairmen of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria and of the Judicial Commission on the occasions of the retirement of Professor Buchanan from the Judicial Commission and of his appointment as a life member to the International Committee.
