Zoogloea ramigera Itzigsohn, identification and description 1
More LessSUMMARYThe problem of identity and nomenclature of Zoogloea ramigera Itzigsohn has been presented. A new strain I-16-M has been described in terms of modern systematic bacteriology and it is proposed for designation as the neotype strain. An Opinion as to validity of the generic name Zoogloea Cohn is requested, and, if found invalid, designation of Zoogloea Itzigsohn as a nomen conservandum.

The taxonomy and nomenclature of the genus Aeromonas Kluyver and van Niel 1936
More LessSUMMARYThree aerogenic Aeromonas species are recognized:
Aeromonas punctata (Zimmermann 1890) Snieszko 1957 Aeromonas hydrophila (Chester 1901) Stanier 1943 Aeromonas salmonicida (Lehmann and Neumann 1896) Griffin, Snieszko and Friddle 1953
A description of these three species is given. The nomenclatural status of the earlier species descriptions brought into connection with aerogenic aeromonads, is critically reviewed.

A salmonella strain (1, 6, 14, 25:1, v:1, 7) which completes the antigenic formula of Salmonella boecker
More LessSUMMARYA salmonella strain with antigenic formula (1, 6, 14, 25:1, v: 1,7) was isolated from tortoises in Istanbul. This strain is similar to S. boecker except it contains somatic antigens 1 and 25. It is proposed that the antigenic formula of this strain should be accepted as representative for S. boecker in the Kauffmann-White schema.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Pseudomonas pyocyanea?
More LessABSTRACTRecently the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria (ICNB) was asked to issue an Opinion conserving the name Pseudomonas pyocyanea (Gessard) Migula and rejecting the name Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Schroeter) Migula. In the present paper evidence is adduced that indicates Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not only the correct scientific name but also that which is in common usage internationally for the type species of the genus Pseudomonas Migula. In the interests of stable nomenclature and popular usage, the authors request that an Opinion be issued by the Judicial Commission, 1) placing the specific epithet aeruginosa, in the combination Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Schroeter) Migula, in the list of Epitheta specifica conservanda, and 2) placing the specific epithet pyocyanea, in the combination Pseudomonas pyocyanea Migula, in the list of Epitheta specifica reji-cienda.

Serological varieties of Shigella flexneri serotype 5
More LessSUMMARYIt is proposed that Shigella flexneri serotype 5 be divided into two subserotypes, 5a and 5b. The former (subtype x−) is agglutinated in absorbed group-factor serum 3,4 and the latter (subtype x+) in absorbed group factor serum 7, 8.

A previously undescribed Salmonella serotype: S. sp. serotype rideau
More LessSUMMARYA new Salmonella serotype (1, 3, 19; fg:-) was described and the designation S. sp. serotype rideau was assigned to it. The culture was isolated in the routine screening of military personnel from Tanzania recently arrived in Canada for special training.

Rothia, gen. nov. an aerobic genus of the family Actinomycetaceae
More LessSUMMARYRothia gen. nov. (Actinomycetaceae) is proposed as the name of a monotypic genus with the species Rothia dentocariosus comb. nov. (basionym Actinomyces dentocariosus Onisi 1949), synonyms Nocardia dentocariosus (Onisi) Roth 1957; Nocardia salivae Davis and Freer 1960, No strain of Onisi’s original isolates is extant. ATCC 17931 is described and proposed as the neotype strain of Rothia dentocariosus (Onisi) Georg and Brown 1967.
