The present study of the fermentation characteristics of 20 species of clostridia has shown that the relative proportions and concentrations of the acids and alcohols produced by these cultures may be very useful in their characterization and identification. The chromatographic methods described are rapid and the patterns are highly reproducible among strains of the same species.

After reviewing published information on Salmonella gallinarum var. duisburg (9: - : -), and on S. duisburg (1, 4, 1, 2, 27:d: enz:15), authors caution against the re-use of names that have been discarded for any reason.

It is proposed that the Judicial Commission of the Nomenclature Committee validate the generic name Arizona Kauffmann and Edwards (1952) and the species name Arizona arizonae Kauffmann and Edwards (1952).

The results of investigations of the biochemical reactions given by members of the genus Arizona Kauffmann and Edwards are summarized and compared to those reported by several other investigators, and to the reactions obtained with the neotype strain of Arizona arizonae Kauffmann and Edwards. Tests of value in the differentiation of Salmonella, Arizona, and Citrobacter are listed. A definition of the genus Arizona is proposed.

An annotated list of 210 corrections and emendations relative to the location (in recognized culture collections) of type strains, neotype strains and reference strains of bacteria as proposed by Sneath and Skerman (1966, 1).
