Abstract

A bacterial strain designated TNR-2 was isolated from spring water in Taiwan and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells of strain TNR-2 were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, straight rods, motile by a single polar flagellum and containing poly-β-hydroxybutyrate. The cells were covered by large capsules and formed yellow colonies. Growth occurred at 15–37 °C (optimum, 20–30 °C), with 0–1.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0–0.1 %) and at pH 5.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0). According to a phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain TNR-2 belonged to the genus and clustered with S8-3, with which it shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (95.6 %). The major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain TNR-2 were Cω7, Cω6 and C. The DNA G+C content was 62.8 mol%. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. The major polyamine was homospermidine. The polar lipid profile consisted of sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, two uncharacterized glycolipids and an uncharacterized phospholipid. Phenotypic characteristics of the novel strain differed from those of the closest related species of the genus . On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain TNR-2 represents a novel species in the genus , for which the name sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TNR-2 ( = BCRC 80539 = LMG 27384 = KCTC 32258).
