On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the strains were found to be closely affiliated with members of the genera Microbulbifer and Thalassomonas. The hybridization values for DNA–DNA relatedness between two of these strains and Microbulbifer reference strains were significantly lower than that accepted as the phylogenetic definition of a species. On the basis of their distinct taxonomic characteristics, six of the isolated strains represent two novel species of the genus Microbulbifer, for which the names Microbulbifer agarilyticus sp. nov. (type strain JAMB A3T =JCM 14708T =DSM 19200T) and Microbulbifer thermotolerans sp. nov.
