Abstract

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterial strain, designated CAU 1289, was isolated from a marine sand and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. It grew optimally at pH 6.5 and 30 °C and in the presence of 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CAU 1289 belonged to the genus , exhibiting sequence similarity values of 93.6–96.3 % to members of this genus, and was related most closely to KMM 6049 (96.3 % similarity). Strain CAU 1289 contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone. The major fatty acid was iso-C. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain CAU 1289 contained -diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipids were composed of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid, an unidentified glycolipid and ten unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content was 38.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic inference, strain CAU 1289 is considered to represent a novel species of the genus , for which the name sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1289 (KCTC 24000 = CCUG 64793). An emended description of the genus is also proposed.
