These two chitinolytic bacteria, which are characterized by transformation into spherical bodies on ageing, belong to a strongly supported lineage that also includes Cytophaga arvensicola, Flavobacterium ferrugineum and Flexibacter sancti. The lineage is distinct from the microcyst-forming species Sporocytophaga myxococcoides.", }
