Abstract

A novel halophilic archaeon, strain Ch2, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Geelong, Australia. The fact that this organism had a -methylated genome suggested that it is closely related to the taxon that includes , and A sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene (Ch2 has three copies of this gene) showed that Ch2 is phylogenetically equidistant from the genera and and closely related to The susceptibility of both Ch2 and to the recently isolated halophage HF2 supported the hypothesis that these two organisms are closely related.
