Bacillus sp. strain DSM 2923T (T = type strain) and five other Bacillus strains isolated from soil were able to grow on nicotinate (niacin) as a sole source of carbon, nitrogen, and energy and to produce a blue pigment. The guanine-plus-cytosine contents of the DNAs of four strains ranged from 37 to 39 mol%. On the basis of the results of common physiological tests, assignment to a previously described Bacillus species was not possible. Thus, these closely related strains are described as a new species, Bacillus niacini.
