Ten strains of this species were isolated from chicken ceca. These strains are obligately anaerobic, grampositive, nonsporeforming, nonmotile, slightly curved, short rod-shaped organisms with pointed ends; the cells occur singly, in pairs, and sometimes in short chains. The fermentation products from glucose or fructose are lactic acid and acetic acid in a molar ratio of 1:4.0 ± 0.2 in broth. These isolates differ from other species in the genus Bifidobacterium in morphology, carbohydrate fermentation pattern, guanine-pluscytosine content of deoxyribonucleic acid, and deoxyribonucleic acid homologies. The type strain of B. gallinarum is Ch206-5 (= ATCC 33777)., UL https://www.microbiologyresearch.org/content/journal/ijsem/10.1099/00207713-33-2-127
